Indian Christian Organizations Increasingly Utilize Legal Channels to Challenge Regulatory Actions
Christian institutions in India are increasingly turning to the judicial system to address administrative challenges, marking a shift from a previous trend of silence. Organizations, including those associated with the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, have sought legal recourse regarding the cancellation of their Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) certificates. The Bombay High Court recently stayed the cancellation of these certificates while the cases remain under review.
Beyond individual legal challenges, Christian leaders and civil society groups are engaging in public discourse regarding the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill of 2026. In response to this advocacy, the Indian government has referred the legislation to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further examination. While the government maintains that stricter FCRA regulations are essential for transparency and national security, proponents of these legal challenges argue that utilizing the court system is a legitimate exercise of citizenship and constitutional rights rather than an act of defiance.
