Worship Leader Launches AI-Powered Tool to Evaluate Song Theology
Houston-based worship leader Tyler Anson Newberry has introduced SongTheology, an artificial intelligence tool designed to help church leaders assess the lyrical content of worship music. Newberry, who has over 30 years of ministry experience, developed the platform through his nonprofit, Asaph’s Table, to address what he identifies as a lack of formal theological training among younger worship leaders. He argues that many leaders currently select songs based on musical preference or social media trends rather than doctrinal substance.
The tool utilizes the AI model Claude to analyze song lyrics against a seven-point "worship theology grid" created by Newberry. This grid evaluates songs based on criteria such as scriptural grounding, doctrinal clarity, and God-centeredness. Users can search for specific songs to receive a score out of 35 points, providing a standardized metric for evaluating whether a composition aligns with congregational worship theology. Newberry hopes the resource will provide the guidance he believes is currently missing from many denominational training programs.
