Houthi Missile Attacks on Riyadh Escalate Regional Conflict

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have intensified ballistic missile strikes against Saudi Arabia, targeting Riyadh and Abha. The attacks have disrupted international air travel, damaged civilian infrastructure including a nursery and a medical clinic, and prompted emergency safety measures for businesses and schools in the Saudi capital. Saudi Civil Defense officials confirmed that three individuals have been killed in the recent strikes.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the attacks, demanding that Saudi Arabia withdraw support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government. In response, Saudi Arabia is seeking military assistance from Turkey and Pakistan under the Mecca defense agreement, while reports suggest Syria may also provide defensive support. As the conflict expands, Houthi forces have gained territory along the Red Sea, threatening the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical global shipping corridor.

The renewed fighting has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, with approximately 200,000 people displaced since the escalation began. While Saudi-backed forces have launched counteroffensives, the conflict continues to spread, raising international concerns regarding regional stability and the security of vital maritime trade routes.
