Appeals Court Rules Historic Los Angeles Cross and Nativity May Remain

A federal appeals court has ruled that a historic cross and nativity display in Los Angeles may remain standing, overturning previous legal challenges that sought their removal. The decision concludes a long-standing dispute regarding the presence of these religious symbols on public land, which had been the subject of litigation for several years.

The court determined that the structures do not violate constitutional provisions regarding the separation of church and state, noting their historical significance to the local community. Supporters of the ruling expressed relief, viewing the decision as a victory for the preservation of religious heritage in public spaces. Opponents of the display had previously argued that the symbols represented an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion.
