Joel Houston reflects on personal struggles and time away from church
Hillsong United frontman Joel Houston recently discussed his experiences with burnout and spiritual exhaustion during an appearance on Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr.’s 'Mature Me' podcast. Houston, the son of Hillsong founders Brian and Bobbie Houston, revealed that he spent two to three years largely absent from church services as he navigated a period of intense soul-searching.
During the interview, Houston described a disconnect between his public success as a worship leader and his internal state, noting that he felt empty and anxious despite his professional achievements. He attributed these struggles to the pressures of ministry and the emotional toll of the controversies that have impacted Hillsong Church in recent years, including the 2022 departure of his father, Brian Houston, following breaches of the church's code of conduct.
Houston explained that this season of withdrawal allowed him to re-evaluate his identity and his relationship with God outside of the institutional framework he had known since childhood. He emphasized that his journey was focused on rediscovering personal faith beyond the validation of public recognition and ministry success.
