Archbishop of Glasgow Announces Closure of Half of City's Catholic Churches

Archbishop William Nolan has confirmed that 24 Catholic churches in Glasgow are set to close, citing a significant decline in Mass attendance and a shortage of clergy. The Archbishop explained that the current infrastructure, built for a larger population, is no longer sustainable given the current number of parishioners and the dwindling pool of active priests. According to Nolan, the number of active priests in the archdiocese has decreased by one-third over the past five years, with only one priest currently under the age of 45.

Nolan acknowledged that the closures will be a painful process for congregations, but stated that the archdiocese must confront the reality of its current situation. While the Archbishop noted that the support of foreign priests and volunteers has prevented a more critical outcome, he emphasized that the current model is no longer viable.

Catholic commentator Mark Lambert described the scale of the closures as extraordinary. He suggested that the situation warrants a broader reflection on the Church's historical approach to evangelization, catechesis, and the formation of families, questioning whether past pastoral priorities have adequately addressed the challenges of secularization.
