Oklahoma City Bombing Survivor Shares Journey of Faith and Forgiveness
Kathy Sanders, who lost her two young grandsons in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, recently shared how her Christian faith guided her through decades of profound grief and anger. Following the tragedy at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, Sanders struggled with suicidal thoughts and witnessed her husband’s deep resentment toward the perpetrators. She credits her survival to a turning point in prayer, where she asked God for the strength to move beyond her bitterness.
Sanders describes forgiveness as a gradual process rather than a single event. This journey led her to correspond with Terry Nichols, a co-conspirator in the bombing, and to befriend his mother. She recounts that through these interactions and her ongoing faith, she found the capacity to release her anger. Sanders emphasizes that while she could not change the reality of her loss, she discovered that she could choose how to respond to the trauma, ultimately finding a sense of peace she attributes to God’s work in her life.
