Mississippi Grand Jury Finds Insufficient Evidence in Death of Nolan Wells

A Jackson County grand jury has returned a no true bill regarding the July death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells on Horn Island, Mississippi. The panel of 23 jurors concluded there is insufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges at this time, though they noted the case could be reopened if new, credible information emerges. District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath stated that the decision followed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death.

Medical experts, including the state’s Chief Medical Examiner and a pathologist hired by the Wells family, were unable to definitively determine the cause or manner of death. While the report noted that drowning is a diagnosis of exclusion, the grand jury found the condition and location of the body to be consistent with drowning. The investigation also addressed injuries found on the body, including bruising on the head, shoulder, and buttocks, though pathologists disagreed on the nature of some of these marks. The grand jury report emphasized that no fatal injuries or organic diseases were identified.
