Jon Courson Explores the Biblical Significance of Zelophehad’s Daughters

In a recent teaching, Jon Courson examines the account of the daughters of Zelophehad found in Numbers 27 and Joshua 17. Courson explains that these women challenged the traditional inheritance laws of their time, successfully petitioning for the right to inherit their father’s land. He highlights that this biblical precedent required them to marry within their own tribe to ensure that land boundaries remained intact.

Courson connects this historical legal ruling to the genealogy of Jesus Christ. He notes that while Joseph’s lineage through Solomon was disqualified from the throne due to the curse placed upon King Jeconiah in Jeremiah 22, Mary’s lineage through David’s son Nathan bypassed this curse. Courson argues that the precedent set by Zelophehad’s daughters allowed the inheritance of the Davidic throne to pass through Mary. By this interpretation, Jesus possessed both the legal and spiritual right to the throne of David, demonstrating what the author describes as the meticulous and perfect nature of God’s plan.
