Memphis Woman Finds Stability and Purpose Through Faith-Based Employment Program

Mariah, a Memphis resident who faced significant personal tragedy and substance abuse, credits a local faith-based initiative with helping her rebuild her life. After losing her mother to violence and her father to cancer, Mariah struggled with severe depression and homelessness, eventually battling addictions to heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. Following an arrest in 2018, she entered a drug court program that provided the necessary counseling and support to achieve sobriety.

Her path to stability led her to the Business Hub of Binghampton Development Corporation, a nonprofit founded by Christ Methodist Church. The organization provides full-time employment and professional development to residents in an area facing high unemployment and economic blight. Mariah describes her work at the Hub as a vital part of her recovery, noting that the program offers a supportive environment for those seeking to transition into long-term careers. Through this work, she says she has found a sense of purpose and a path forward after years of instability.
