Vicar launches initiative connecting theology with gardening at Kew Gardens

The Reverend Giles Fraser, vicar of St Anne’s Church in west London, has launched a charity titled Kew Theology & Gardening. The project hosts lectures and retreats that explore the intersection of environmental stewardship, theology, and the popular British pastime of gardening. Fraser, a trustee of the organization, suggests that the act of gardening serves as a spiritual connection to the biblical narrative of creation, noting the physical similarities between gardening and prayer.

The initiative reflects a broader focus within the Church of England on environmental responsibility, a commitment formalized by the General Synod in 2005. While the Church has set a goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, the policy has faced criticism regarding the financial burden it places on historic parishes. The Methodist Church recently abandoned its own 2030 net-zero target, citing concerns that maintaining an unattainable goal could undermine the institution's credibility.
