Coordinated Attacks on Christian Communities in Nigeria’s Plateau State Result in Fatalities

A series of coordinated overnight attacks on August 17-18 targeted several predominantly Christian communities in Nigeria’s Plateau State, including Bin Mper, Chakfem, and Rim. While reports on the total death toll vary, International Christian Concern and local community leaders confirmed at least 24 Christians were killed in Bin Mper, where women and children were among the victims. Other reports, including those from TruthNigeria, suggest the total number of fatalities across the three villages may reach 27, as assailants struck multiple locations simultaneously.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the violence and directed security agencies to increase patrols in the affected areas. Community representatives, including Jonathan Kyesmang of the Mwaghavul Youth National Association, alleged that the violence is linked to ongoing efforts to seize ancestral lands. Witnesses reported that the attackers spoke Fulani, though local leaders emphasized that these militants do not represent the entire Fulani population. Investigations into the failure of security forces to intervene despite alleged advance warnings are ongoing as affected families mourn the victims.
