Violent Protests Erupt Across France Amid Allegations of Targeted Antisemitism
Widespread civil unrest broke out across France on October 17 as hundreds of thousands of protesters demonstrated against rising living costs and declining public services. The protests, which saw significant violence in cities including Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, resulted in over 1,200 arrests and more than 150 police injuries. In Marseille, reports confirm that approximately 40 businesses were looted and government property was damaged as rioters roamed the city center.
Amid the chaos, French journalist Paul Amar alleged that Jewish-owned businesses in Marseille were specifically targeted and set on fire, while other establishments were spared. While these claims have circulated in media reports, they have not been independently verified. Additionally, reports of antisemitic rhetoric emerged in Paris, where a protester was observed carrying a sign referencing Jewish people. These events occur against a backdrop of rising concern regarding antisemitism in France, coinciding with a notable increase in French Jews immigrating to Israel. Official data indicates that 3,950 French Jews have moved to Israel in the first nine months of 2026, already surpassing the total number of arrivals for the entirety of 2025.
