Former New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell suspended as UMC pastor

The United Methodist Church has suspended Dale Caldwell from his pastoral duties at Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield, New Jersey. Bishop Cynthia Moore-Koikoi of the Eastern Pennsylvania and Greater New Jersey Episcopal Area announced the suspension, stating that the church is processing a formal complaint following the release of a recent investigation report.

Caldwell, who resigned as New Jersey’s lieutenant governor in September 2026, faced allegations of sexual harassment and ethical misconduct during his time in office. The state investigation concluded that Caldwell engaged in sexual harassment, including making inappropriate comments and romantic advances toward a staffer's acquaintance. Additionally, the report substantiated claims that he violated state ethics rules by bringing unauthorized guests to ticketed events. While Caldwell denied the allegations of inappropriate comments, investigators found his denials lacked credibility. The church has placed him on leave to ensure the well-being of the congregation and all parties involved while the internal review continues.
