Former Ukrainian Catholic Priest Charged With Stealing Over $740,000

Gregory Allen Madeya, a 69-year-old former Ukrainian Catholic priest, was arrested in Florida in August 2026 on charges of stealing more than $740,000. Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced that Madeya faces multiple felony charges, including financial exploitation of an older adult, theft, and access device fraud, for crimes allegedly committed between 2018 and 2026.

Authorities allege that Madeya misappropriated approximately $320,000 from three Pennsylvania churches under the Eparchy of St. Josaphat and over $230,000 from his mother, for whom he held power of attorney. Investigators claim the theft of his mother's funds resulted in her eviction from multiple nursing homes. Additionally, Madeya is accused of failing to pay over $248,000 in tax obligations. Prosecutors allege the stolen funds were used for personal expenses, including the purchase of a vehicle and the sale of a church chalice.

Madeya is currently awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania to face the charges. Attorney General Sunday condemned the alleged actions, stating that the defendant abused the trust of both his religious community and his family.
