Pakistani Court Issues First Conviction in 2023 Jaranwala Church Attacks

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sentenced Irfan Yousaf to ten years in prison for his role in the 2023 riots in Jaranwala, where he was identified via video footage using a crane to demolish two church buildings. This ruling marks the first conviction related to the violence that occurred on August 16, 2023, following false allegations of Quran desecration against two local Christian men.

Despite this conviction, the court acquitted 13 other defendants, citing a "defective" police investigation. Judge Waseem Mubarak criticized law enforcement for significant procedural failures, including a six-day delay in registering the case, a lack of intervention during the riots, and substandard evidence collection. The violence, which involved members of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan party, resulted in the destruction of 26 churches and the looting of at least 86 homes. Legal advocates for the victims expressed concern that these systemic investigative shortcomings continue to hinder accountability for sectarian violence, noting that the majority of the estimated 5,200 participants remain unpunished.
