FEMA Allocates $300 Million for Nonprofit and Religious Security Grants

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has distributed $300 million in fiscal year 2026 grants to enhance security for approximately 1,600 houses of worship and nonprofit organizations across the United States. This funding is intended to support physical security upgrades, safety training, and other protective measures for institutions deemed at high risk of extremist or terrorist attacks.

While the grants provide assistance, demand for security funding continues to surpass available resources. Jewish organizations have noted a significant rise in security costs, with the Jewish Federations of North America reporting that expenditures reached over $1 billion in 2025, a 33% increase from the previous year. In response to these ongoing concerns, a bipartisan group of senators has introduced the Jewish American Security Act, which proposes increasing the program's authorization to $1 billion to better address the needs of faith-based communities.
