Albanian Evangelical Alliance calls for prayer amid escalating civil unrest

The Evangelical Alliance of Albania (VUSH) has issued a call to prayer as recent protests in Tirana have shifted from peaceful demonstrations to violent clashes. The unrest, which began in June over environmental concerns regarding a nature reserve, has expanded to include student demands for lower tuition and improved economic prospects. Recent days have seen barricades, property damage, and confrontations between protesters and riot police.

VUSH leadership, including General Secretary Alesio Sema, has condemned violence from both protesters and law enforcement. The organization is urging Christians to pray for protection against hatred and division, while asking for wisdom and integrity for government officials. The alliance emphasizes that prayer is a primary means of engagement during times of social upheaval.

The current political climate remains polarized, with Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government attributing the unrest to opposition efforts to disrupt Albania’s European Union integration. Meanwhile, some conservative groups express concern that EU membership could threaten traditional values. VUSH has called for a renewed national commitment to listening and dialogue to address the country's underlying social tensions.
