Philippine Evangelical Leaders Urge Churches to Prioritize Family Ministry
The Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC) has issued a pastoral directive calling on local congregations to prioritize family restoration as a core ministry. The initiative, which coincided with National Family Month in September, encourages churches to focus on strengthening marriages, supporting parents, and protecting children through worship, prayer, and educational programs.
In their statement, the leaders cited significant demographic shifts, including a decline in the total fertility rate to 1.7% and a rise in children born out of wedlock. They also noted the challenges faced by over 15 million solo parents and the prevalence of youth violence. The PCEC emphasized that stable family structures are essential for the spiritual and emotional well-being of children, citing research that links stable home environments to better outcomes.
To address these issues, the council recommended that churches implement bio-psycho-social-spiritual initiatives, such as marriage counseling and parenting education. Furthermore, the directive encourages Christians to engage with local schools and government officials to advocate for policies that support family preservation, living wages, and the welfare of solo parents.
