Ethiopian Airlines Cargo Flight Turned Back Over Indonesian Pilot

An Ethiopian Airlines cargo flight was ordered to return to Addis Ababa after Israeli security officials identified an Indonesian pilot on board. Because Indonesia and Israel lack diplomatic relations, Israeli aviation security protocols prohibit nationals from such countries from entering Israeli airspace. The aircraft, which had already departed Ethiopia, was forced to turn back while still in Ethiopian airspace. After landing in Addis Ababa to replace the pilot, the flight successfully completed its journey to Israel.

Ethiopian Airlines stated it was unaware of the specific restrictions regarding the pilot's nationality. This incident follows a recent tightening of Israeli aviation security measures, implemented after a September 30 incident involving a flydubai flight. In that case, an Omani co-pilot allegedly attempted to crash a plane into Ben Gurion Airport. Following that event, Israeli authorities mandated that foreign airlines ensure crew members from countries without diplomatic ties to Israel are not assigned to flights entering the nation. Reports indicate that over 1,200 crew members from such countries may have previously entered Israel.
