Episcopal Church reports continued decline in membership and attendance
The Episcopal Church has released its 2025 Parochial Report, revealing a sustained downward trend in membership and participation. The denomination reported approximately 1.425 million members in 2025, a decrease from the 1.547 million recorded in 2023 and the 1.77 million reported in 2015. This represents a total loss of nearly 350,000 members over the last decade.
In-person Sunday worship attendance also saw a decline, falling to roughly 407,000 in 2025 from 413,000 the previous year and 600,000 in 2015. Additionally, the number of active parishes and missions dropped to 6,673, while baptisms decreased slightly to 19,316. The report acknowledges that these figures reflect a long-standing pattern of decline that has persisted for several decades.
While the denomination did not provide a membership total for 2024 due to reported confusion regarding data collection methods, the 2025 analysis confirms the ongoing contraction. Observers note that the denomination's progressive theological trajectory has been a point of contention, contributing to the departure of various congregations and dioceses over the years.
