Egyptian Students Use Internet to Explore Christianity Amid Surveillance Risks

In Cairo, Egypt, college students are increasingly utilizing social media and the internet to explore religious ideas outside of their traditional belief systems. According to local ministry workers, this digital access allows young people to compare Islamic teachings with Christianity. While this trend provides a platform for freedom of thought, it also presents significant risks, as the Egyptian government utilizes the same digital infrastructure to monitor online activity and prosecute individuals for alleged blasphemy or cybercrimes.

Egypt remains home to the largest Christian population in the Middle East, with estimates suggesting over 10 million Christians, the vast majority of whom are Coptic Orthodox. Despite a long history of Christianity in the region dating back to Mark the Evangelist, the Christian community continues to face varying degrees of discrimination under the current political climate. As the nation’s population grows, observers note that young people are increasingly questioning their faith, though the overall percentage of Christians in the country has remained relatively stable at approximately 10 percent.
