Ebola outbreak spreads to eight provinces in Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a significant escalation in its 17th Ebola outbreak, which has now spread to eight provinces, including North Ubangi. Tearfund, a Christian development agency, reports that the country is recording an average of 71 new cases daily. Officials warn that total infections could soon reach 10,000, with the death toll potentially climbing to 5,000 if the spread is not contained.
Frontline healthcare workers are struggling to manage the crisis due to severe shortages of protective medical equipment, ongoing regional armed conflict, and limited access to clean water. Despite these risks, medical staff continue to provide care, citing their professional commitment to their communities. Tearfund is currently collaborating with local health authorities and religious leaders to distribute hygiene supplies, train staff on infection prevention, and combat misinformation through radio broadcasts and community outreach.
