Exploring Biblical Perspectives on Human Free Will and Divine Sovereignty

In a recent teaching, Ligonier Ministries examines the long-standing theological debate regarding human free will, contrasting the perspectives of libertarian free will and compatibilism. The author outlines the libertarian view, often held by Arminians, which posits that individuals possess the power of contrary choice, meaning one could have chosen differently under identical circumstances. Proponents of this view argue that such freedom is essential for genuine moral responsibility and the ability to love God authentically, frequently citing passages like John 3:16.

Conversely, the author presents the Reformed theological perspective of compatibilism as a more biblically consistent model. This view argues that libertarian freedom conflicts with the biblical doctrines of divine sovereignty, as seen in Isaiah 45 and Ephesians 1, and human depravity, as described in Romans 3 and 8. The teaching suggests that human choices are not independent of God's providence. By examining these frameworks, the author encourages believers to consider how Scripture balances the reality of human responsibility with the absolute sovereignty of God over all events.
