Pakistan Supreme Court Details Acquittal in 2014 Killing of Christian Couple

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has released a 26-page judgment detailing its July 9 acquittal of three men previously sentenced to death for the 2014 murder of Shahzad Masih and his pregnant wife, Shama Bibi. The Christian couple was beaten and burned alive in a brick kiln in Punjab province following allegations of Quran desecration. The court stated there was no convincing evidence to support the blasphemy accusations or the convictions of the defendants.

The three-judge bench acknowledged the brutality of the crime but ruled that the prosecution failed to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The court highlighted significant gaps in the case, noting that none of the victims' relatives served as complainants or signed investigation memos. Furthermore, the judges questioned the omission of primary suspect Muhammad Irfan’s name from the initial police report. The ruling emphasized that the severity of an offense cannot replace the legal requirement for reliable evidence.

The decision has caused concern among Pakistani Christians, who are currently observing the anniversary of the 2023 Jaranwala attacks. Advocates for the minority community expressed worry regarding the lack of accountability for violence directed against Christians in the region.
