Rohingya Christians Face Heightened Persecution and Displacement

Rohingya Christians, a small minority estimated at approximately 1,500 individuals, continue to face severe challenges due to their stateless status and religious identity. While the majority of the Rohingya population is Muslim, those who have converted to Christianity report facing hostility from both the Myanmar military and fellow refugees. Many have fled to Bangladesh, where they report experiencing kidnappings, forced re-conversions, and physical attacks within refugee camps.

Sadeq Shalom, a Rohingya Christian currently residing in India, notes that the few Christians remaining in Myanmar face extreme danger from both state forces and armed resistance groups. In Bangladesh, some individuals have sought safety in police-guarded transit centers, though concerns remain regarding the potential closure of these facilities. Meanwhile, approximately 150 Rohingya Christians have sought refuge in India, where authorities have recently increased enforcement of regulations against stateless migrants. Shalom observes that while inter-religious tensions are currently lower in India than in the Bangladeshi camps, the community remains highly vulnerable to violence and systemic displacement.
