Columbia Theological Seminary President Victor Aloyo Jr. Announces Retirement

Victor Aloyo Jr., the 11th president of Columbia Theological Seminary, has announced his retirement effective December 31, 2026. After serving for four and a half years, Aloyo stated his intention to dedicate more time to his family. As the first person of color to lead the Decatur, Georgia-based institution in its 198-year history, he is also recognized by the Presbyterian Church (USA) as the first Hispanic president to head one of its affiliated theological schools.

Board of Trustees chair Elizabeth Cole Goodrich praised Aloyo for his leadership during a period of transition following the COVID-19 pandemic. During his tenure, Aloyo focused on strengthening the seminary’s ties to the PCUSA, enhancing alumni engagement, and prioritizing student recruitment. The institution reports that these efforts have contributed to increased enrollment and a stable foundation as the school prepares for its third century of operation. Aloyo will continue to work with seminary leadership through the end of the year to facilitate a transition to the next administration.
