Colombian Court Rules Presidential Inauguration Prayer Violated State Religious Neutrality

The Evangelical Confederation of Colombia (CEDECOL) has issued a statement supporting Pastor Eduardo Cañas Estrada following a court ruling regarding the August 7 inauguration of President Abelardo de la Espriella. The Fifth Labor Circuit Court of Bogotá determined that the inclusion of prayer and religious praise during the official ceremony in Cali breached the state's constitutional duty of religious neutrality.

In response to a legal challenge filed by a citizen, the court ordered President De la Espriella to issue a public apology and a directive ensuring that future state events remain neutral regarding religious creeds. While the court dismissed the religious leaders as parties to the case, it directed its orders toward government officials responsible for the event's organization.

CEDECOL, led by Pastor Lyda Elena Arias, criticized the ruling as an act of censorship and defended the participation of clergy as a legitimate expression of faith in the public sphere. The decision has reignited national debate in Colombia concerning the balance between maintaining a secular state and protecting the rights of religious individuals to participate in public life.
