Church in Wales Delays Plans for Same-Sex Marriage in Churches

The Church in Wales has announced a pause in its plans to permit same-sex weddings within its church buildings. While the Bench of Bishops previously established a permanent liturgy for blessing same-sex unions in April, they have now determined that more time is required to evaluate the path toward enabling equal marriage. The bishops stated that further theological reflection on the doctrine of marriage is necessary before proposing formal legislation to the Governing Body.

To facilitate this process, the Bench intends to request a formal dialogue at the Governing Body meeting scheduled for April 2027. This discussion is intended to include representatives holding both traditional and progressive perspectives on the issue. The bishops emphasized that while they remain supportive of the eventual introduction of equal marriage, they believe a period of frank interaction is essential to determine the most appropriate legislative approach. This development follows the 2025 appointment of Archbishop Cherry Vann, whose leadership has previously drawn criticism from conservative groups regarding the church's theological direction.
