New Books by Kevin DeYoung and Eric Metaxas Explore Historical Narratives

Two new books released in late 2026 offer distinct perspectives on history for Christian readers. Kevin DeYoung, a Presbyterian pastor and historian, has published the first volume of 'Church History for Everyone,' which covers the period from the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70 to the start of the Protestant Reformation. DeYoung utilizes a biographical approach to examine key figures, including early church fathers and medieval thinkers, while addressing both the successes and failures of Christian leadership throughout the era.

In contrast, Eric Metaxas has released 'Revolution: The Birth of the Greatest Nation in the History of the World.' This work focuses on the American Revolution, framing the nation's founding through a lens of American exceptionalism. While DeYoung’s book is noted for its accessibility and inclusion of discussion questions for educational settings, critics observe that Metaxas’s approach aligns with Christian nationalist historical narratives, focusing less on the flaws of his subjects than the biographical style employed by DeYoung.
