Christians in India's Bastar District Face Flooding and Ongoing Hostility

Christians in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, India, are navigating a humanitarian crisis following severe flooding along the Indravati River. Between September 24 and 27, heavy monsoon rains and dam water discharges caused the river to breach its banks, impacting 571 villages. Official reports indicate eight fatalities and the rescue of approximately 16,000 people, with over 22,000 individuals currently residing in relief camps.

Many tribal Christians, who were already experiencing significant social pressure, have lost homes, livestock, and agricultural land. Pastor Golu Singh, whose own home collapsed, is currently sheltering several displaced families within his church building. Reports suggest that these families were already facing intense hostility from local hardliners, including threats and restrictions on their ability to cultivate crops. The combination of environmental destruction and ongoing religious tension has left many in the community struggling to secure basic necessities and recover from the dual impact of the floods and local persecution.
