Congolese Christian Woman Rescued After Years of Captivity by ADF Rebels

Katungu Mbaka Darke has returned to her community in the Democratic Republic of the Congo after being held captive by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) for over two years. Abducted during a 2022 attack in Lume village, Darke endured severe abuse and was coerced into religious conversion. Despite these pressures, she states that she maintained her faith in Jesus throughout her ordeal.

Darke was eventually rescued by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces in Ituri Province. Her return has been met with profound relief by her family and the local community, who had previously held a burial ceremony for her, believing she would not survive. Local leaders and church members in Mutwanga have expressed gratitude for her safe return, describing it as a source of renewed hope for the region.

While celebrating her homecoming, church leaders emphasized that Darke’s story reflects the ongoing suffering of many others still held by armed groups. Her recovery journey continues as the community works to support her transition back to life after her long separation.
