Christian teacher files discrimination claim following dismissal over classroom views

Anita Meston, a 63-year-old supply teacher, has initiated legal action against Biddick Academy in Sunderland, alleging she was unfairly dismissed for expressing her personal beliefs. Meston, who is being supported by the Alliance Defending Freedom, claims her contract was terminated after she answered student questions regarding her pro-life stance and political views during a history lesson in March 2025.

According to Meston, the discussion occurred during a lesson on the bombing of Dresden, when students asked for her perspective on the Israel-Palestine conflict and abortion. Meston states she provided brief, honest answers rooted in her Christian faith before returning to the curriculum. The following day, the school’s headteacher informed her that a complaint had been filed and that she was prohibited from sharing personal views in the classroom, leading to the immediate termination of her contract.

Meston, an educator with 28 years of experience, argues that she did not attempt to impose her views on students but was simply responding to their inquiries. A preliminary Employment Tribunal hearing is scheduled for October 16 to address the discrimination claim.
