NHS England Issues New Guidance on Sex-Segregated Spaces

NHS England has introduced new guidance mandating that biological sex, rather than gender identity, should generally determine access to sex-segregated spaces, including bathrooms and changing rooms. Under the new policy, patients are to be accommodated according to their biological sex, with exceptions permitted only for specific clinical needs. The guidance requires that any instances where patients are placed in accommodation inconsistent with their biological sex must be formally reported and monitored.

The Christian Legal Centre has welcomed the policy change, describing it as a significant step toward prioritizing biological reality in healthcare settings. The organization supported several high-profile legal cases that preceded this decision, including those involving nurses who faced disciplinary action or workplace disputes regarding the use of preferred pronouns and access to sex-segregated facilities. While the Christian Legal Centre praised the new rules, Chief Executive Andrea Williams noted that the guidance does not yet provide sufficient clarity or protection for staff regarding the use of preferred pronouns, arguing that healthcare professionals should not be compelled to express beliefs about gender identity that they do not hold.
