Illinois Court Protects Religious Healthcare Providers from Assisted Suicide Mandate

U.S. District Judge Franklin Valderrama has issued an expanded court order shielding numerous religious healthcare providers in Illinois from being required to perform or refer patients for assisted suicide. The ruling temporarily blocks the state from enforcing the End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act against members of several major organizations, including the Illinois Catholic Health Association, the Christian Medical & Dental Associations, and the National Association of Catholic Nurses.

This order builds upon an earlier injunction that initially protected specific plaintiffs, such as the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield and the Lutheran Care Center. The Thomas More Society, which represents the plaintiffs, stated that the expanded protection covers the vast majority of Catholic healthcare institutions in the state, including hospitals, nursing homes, and pharmacies. Legal counsel for the plaintiffs argued that the mandate previously forced medical professionals to choose between their professional licenses and their religious convictions. Litigation regarding the state law is ongoing as the plaintiffs seek a permanent injunction.
