Christian Charity Urges Northern Ireland to Ban Prostitution Websites
The Christian social policy organization CARE has called on the Northern Ireland Executive and the UK government to implement a ban on websites that facilitate prostitution. This appeal follows a new report from the Northern Ireland Assembly All-Party Group on Modern Slavery and Commercial Sexual Exploitation, which highlights how digital platforms have replaced traditional methods of soliciting sex work.
The report details the severe risks associated with the industry, including testimony from a survivor who described being drugged to ensure compliance. To address these issues, the All-Party Group recommends introducing Sex Trafficking Risk Orders, enhancing cross-border cooperation with the Republic of Ireland, and amending the Online Safety Act to prohibit prostitution-related websites across Britain. Additionally, the report advocates for improved police training and a fully funded health strategy to support individuals seeking to exit the sex trade.
Caroline Ansell, Director of Advocacy at CARE, stated that the report provides a clear opportunity for the government to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete action against commercial sexual exploitation. She emphasized that implementing these recommendations would demonstrate a genuine commitment to combating violence against women and girls.
