Cuban Christian Content Creator and Mother Convicted Following Privacy Dispute
A Havana municipal court has convicted 21-year-old Christian content creator Anna Sofía Benítez Silvente and her mother, Caridad Silvente Laffita, on charges of violating the privacy of a state security agent. The charges stem from an incident on March 10, when the women filmed an agent who arrived at their Alamar home in civilian clothing. The court sentenced both women to two years of "restriction of liberty." While Christian Solidarity Worldwide reported this as house arrest, other sources indicate the penalty involves court supervision, travel restrictions, and mandatory appearances, rather than full confinement.
Defense attorney Roberto Ortega stated that the legal team intends to appeal the verdict. In a rare show of solidarity, four major Protestant denominations—the Assemblies of God, the Baptist Convention of Western Cuba, the Evangelical League of Cuba, and the Methodist Church of Cuba—issued statements supporting the women. The Baptist Convention of Western Cuba defended the pair as righteous members of their community, arguing that the conviction reflects a broader pattern of injustice within the country.
