Christian Aid Groups and Local Churches Respond to Colombia Earthquake

Following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026, Christian relief organizations and local congregations are mobilizing to provide emergency aid. The disaster, described as the strongest in the region in a decade or a century depending on the report, has resulted in hundreds of deaths, thousands of displaced residents, and over 26,000 destroyed homes.

Samaritan’s Purse has airlifted 100,000 pounds of supplies, including hygiene kits and shelter materials, to support approximately 6,000 households. The organization is coordinating its efforts through local Colombian teams and a network of over 100 pastors to reach affected communities. Meanwhile, Operation Blessing is also partnering with local churches to provide food to survivors.

Local congregations in cities like Pereira are actively participating in recovery efforts. Church members have been seen assisting in search-and-rescue operations, opening their homes to the displaced, and preparing meals for neighbors. Volunteers emphasize that these efforts aim to address both the immediate physical needs of survivors and the long-term spiritual support required to process the trauma caused by the earthquake.
