Sales of 'Real Advent Calendar' Surge Following Online Controversy
Sales of the 'Real Advent Calendar,' produced by the Meaningful Chocolate Company, have increased significantly following a public dispute involving Anglican clergy and supporters of the Duchess of Sussex. The controversy began when the Rev. Daniel French suggested the £5.99 fairtrade calendar, which benefits The Leprosy Mission, as an alternative to a premium advent calendar released by Meghan Markle. This recommendation drew sharp criticism from some of the Duchess's online supporters, known as the 'Sussex Squad.'
Despite the online backlash, The Leprosy Mission reports receiving global support and a surge in orders. Amanda Norman, Chief Executive of The Leprosy Mission Shop, clarified that the vicar’s comments were intended to promote charitable giving rather than criticize the Duchess. Norman noted that the organization has historically maintained positive relations with the royal family, including the late Princess Diana and Prince Harry, who have previously supported their work. The calendar, which includes a booklet detailing the Christmas story, continues to raise funds for those affected by leprosy.
