Children’s Society report links declining wellbeing to lack of community belonging

A new report from the Christian charity The Children’s Society highlights a significant correlation between declining childhood wellbeing and a lack of social belonging in the United Kingdom. Based on a survey of over 2,000 young people aged 10 to 17, the research indicates that those with low wellbeing are substantially more likely to feel disconnected from their local neighborhoods. Nearly 32% of respondents reported feeling unable to be themselves in their communities, while over 27% felt unwelcome by local adults.

The study notes a broader, long-term decline in youth happiness, with average life satisfaction scores dropping from 8.17 in 2009/10 to 7.62 in 2023/24. Young people identified school experiences, physical appearance, rising costs, and crime as primary sources of concern. The report emphasizes that children define belonging as being valued and accepted without pressure to change. The charity suggests that fostering supportive relationships and providing welcoming community spaces are essential steps for improving mental health and self-esteem among the younger generation.
