OpenAI Analysis Reveals High Volume of Religious Inquiries on ChatGPT
A recent analysis by OpenAI indicates that ChatGPT processes approximately 70 million religion-related requests each week. Data collected between September 2025 and September 2026 shows that 45% of these inquiries concern Islam, while 34% relate to Christianity. Smaller percentages of requests focused on Hinduism, Judaism, and Buddhism. The report notes that interest in specific faiths often peaks during major religious observances, such as Ramadan for Islam and Easter for Christianity.
Users frequently utilize the platform to study religious texts, with 22 million weekly requests dedicated to this purpose. Regarding Christianity, nearly half of the inquiries involve Bible passages, while 13% focus on worship, sermons, or church practices. OpenAI researchers suggest that individuals are using the technology to deepen their understanding of faith and prepare for religious observances.
While the report highlights the utility of AI for spiritual growth, researchers emphasize that it should not replace human interaction. This aligns with findings from the Barna Group, which suggest that while many practicing Christians are open to using AI, they still seek guidance from their pastors on how to engage with the technology appropriately.
