Texas Camp Mystic Owners Under Investigation Following Fatal 2025 Flooding

Owners and staff of Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp in Hunt, Texas, are currently under criminal investigation regarding the deaths of 28 people during a flash flood on July 4, 2025. The victims included 25 campers, two counselors, and camp owner Dick Eastland. Investigators are seeking electronic communications to determine if charges such as manslaughter, child abandonment, or negligent homicide are warranted.

Texas Ranger Brant Johnson stated in an affidavit that the camp’s emergency protocols were insufficient. The investigation suggests that despite monitoring flood warnings, leadership allegedly failed to relocate campers from low-lying cabins or conduct necessary emergency drills. The affidavit further claims that the camp lacked adequate adult supervision to manage an evacuation during the crisis. While no formal charges have been filed, authorities are reviewing evidence to determine if the camp’s management consciously disregarded the safety of those in their care.
