Calvary Chapel Pastor and Wife Killed in Irapuato, Mexico

Pastor Ángel González and his wife, Irán Montes, were fatally shot early Thursday morning outside their home in Irapuato, Mexico. The couple, who led the Calvary Chapel Irapuato congregation, were reportedly returning from a funeral when they were attacked in their vehicle. González died at the scene, while Montes succumbed to her injuries while being transported to a hospital.

Local authorities have detained one male suspect in connection with the shooting, though his identity has not been disclosed. While some reports suggest the incident may have been a robbery, officials have not yet confirmed a motive for the attack. The couple is survived by their two teenage children.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief within the Calvary Chapel network and the broader evangelical community. The region of Guanajuato, where the church is located, has experienced ongoing violence linked to organized crime. Advocacy groups like Open Doors have noted that church leaders in Mexico often face significant risks in areas where criminal organizations operate with high levels of impunity.
