Hindu Leader Calls for 'Church-Free' Odisha During Public Event

A prominent Hindu religious leader recently issued a public call to make the Indian state of Odisha “church-free” during a book launch event in Bhubaneswar. The event, which focused on the life of the late monk Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati, was attended by high-ranking officials, including Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale, and former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

During the gathering, speakers advocated for a ban on the activities of those they labeled as “heretics” and encouraged the expansion of religious outreach into the Kandhamal district. This region was the site of significant communal violence in 2008 following the assassination of Saraswati, an event that led to widespread attacks against the local Christian community.

Observers note that the presence of state officials at the event has raised concerns regarding the potential for state-sanctioned pressure against religious minorities. Critics argue that these demands challenge the freedom of religion guaranteed under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, which protects the right of citizens to practice and propagate their faith.
