Church of Scotland transfers historic Brechin Cathedral to community trust

The Church of Scotland has officially transferred ownership of the 800-year-old Brechin Cathedral to the Brechin Cathedral Trust. The site ceased functioning as a place of worship in November 2021, following the dissolution of its congregation due to financial constraints. The building had served as a focal point for local civic and family life for centuries.

Church officials and trust representatives expressed optimism regarding the transition, stating that the trust is dedicated to maintaining the landmark as a community asset. Rev Dr Scott Rennie, a former minister at the cathedral, noted that the transfer provides a new chapter for the site. Conversely, some observers, including Marcus Walker of Save the Parish, have criticized the Church of Scotland for relinquishing the historic property.

Industry experts have previously raised concerns regarding the financial viability of maintaining such historic structures. The Church of Scotland has noted that the recent replacement of the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme with a lower-budget alternative has created additional fiscal challenges for the preservation of historic church buildings.
