National Church Life Survey Examines Australian Spirituality and Church Trends

The National Church Life Survey (NCLS) has released new data regarding the spiritual experiences of Australians, revealing that 35 percent of the population experiences a sense of awe regarding nature at least weekly. Furthermore, 84 percent of respondents reported feeling gratitude or thankfulness at least several times a year. These findings coincide with broader research efforts by the NCLS to assess the spiritual health of the nation.

In addition to general population trends, the NCLS is conducting a comprehensive survey of hundreds of thousands of churchgoers across more than 22 denominations. This research aims to analyze denominational demographics, political affiliations, and attitudes toward environmental stewardship. Previous data indicated a rise in environmental themes within worship services, though individual Christian commitment to environmental activism saw a slight decline between 2011 and 2021. The current survey seeks to provide updated insights into these evolving perspectives within the Australian church.
