Jerusalem Christian Schools Suspend Classes Over Denied Staff Permits

Christian schools in Jerusalem have suspended the start of the 2026-2027 academic year following the Israeli government's decision not to renew entry permits for over 70 teachers and staff members. The General Secretariat for Christian Educational Institutions announced that the lack of personnel, which includes administrative and support roles, makes it impossible to maintain necessary safety and operational standards for students.

These private institutions, overseen by the Latin Patriarchate, serve as a significant part of the city's educational landscape. The secretariat stated that the sudden, unannounced denial of permits has disrupted the schools' ability to function. This development follows a broader trend of increased restrictions on entry permits for Palestinian workers implemented by the Israeli government since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. Similar permit issues caused temporary school closures earlier this year, as staff permits are currently subject to term-by-term renewal rather than annual authorization.
