Argentina Joins Geneva Consensus Declaration on Women's Health and Family

Argentina has officially joined the Geneva Consensus Declaration on Promoting Women’s Health and Strengthening the Family, an international initiative asserting that there is no global right to abortion. The move, announced by the government of President Javier Milei, emphasizes national sovereignty, stating that each country retains the authority to determine its own abortion policies and laws through domestic legislative processes.

The declaration, which includes over 40 participating nations, affirms the inherent right to life and maintains that abortion should not be promoted as a method of family planning. While the accession signals a shift in the nation's international political stance, officials noted that it does not immediately alter Argentina’s existing domestic legislation, specifically Law 27.610, which currently regulates access to abortion. Any future changes to the national legal framework would require following established parliamentary procedures.
