Claygate Church, a congregation with locations in Bournemouth, Southbourne, and Poole, has begun accepting donations in bitcoin. Sean Theunissen, an elder and operations lead at the church, stated that the decision is intended to streamline financial support for international partnerships and bypass delays caused by traditional intermediary banking systems. He emphasized that the church remains focused on its central gospel message, viewing the adoption of digital currency as a practical tool rather than a theological shift.

While the adoption of cryptocurrency remains relatively rare among UK congregations, the practice is more established in the United States, where platforms like Pushpay already facilitate such transactions. Proponents in the U.S. suggest that embracing digital assets could help churches engage younger generations. However, UK-based fundraisers and treasurers remain cautious, citing differences in tax and charity regulations between the two nations. While some see potential for growth, many industry observers express skepticism regarding the widespread adoption of cryptocurrency for church giving in the UK in the near term.
