Protesters Gather at Indonesian Parliament Demanding Anti-Corruption Reforms

Large crowds gathered outside the parliament building in Jakarta on Thursday to protest against government corruption and economic challenges. Organized by various groups, including the United Pati People’s Alliance, demonstrators called for the immediate passage of a long-delayed asset-forfeiture bill. This legislation, first proposed in 2008, would grant authorities the power to seize assets suspected of being linked to criminal activity, though some critics have expressed concerns regarding the potential for political misuse.

Beyond anti-corruption measures, protesters demanded improved access to healthcare, education, and employment, alongside calls for broader democratic reforms. While Jakarta Police initially estimated a turnout of at least 500 participants, reports suggest the actual number of demonstrators was significantly higher. Amid the rising tensions, some local Christians expressed apprehension regarding the potential for violence, noting that many professionals in the capital opted to work from home as a precaution. Parliament has reportedly assured protest representatives that the asset-forfeiture legislation is expected to be passed by December.
